A properly built driveway lasts decades. I do the base work right so you're not patching it every spring after the frost heave.
Montana winters are hard on driveways. Freeze-thaw cycles heave the base, water gets in and makes it worse, and a driveway that wasn't built right in the first place ends up needing work every couple of years. A properly built gravel driveway — one with the right base depth, good drainage, and a correct crown — can go 20 years or more with minimal maintenance. I build them to last.
Whether you need a short driveway to a new home or a long rural access road across rough terrain, I'll do the job right from the start. That means the base work matters as much as what's on top — and I don't skip it.
I handle all types of driveway and access road construction for residential and rural properties around Helena.
The base is everything. I strip the existing material down, make sure the sub-grade is solid, and build up with the right depth of compacted base material for the traffic load the driveway needs to handle. I crown the surface so water sheds to the sides instead of sitting in the middle and working its way down. Side ditches or swales carry that water away from the driveway so it doesn't undercut the edge.
On driveways that cross drainage areas or low spots, I install culverts sized to handle the flow — not just whatever fits in the trench. Undersized culverts wash out. I size them right so the crossing lasts.
If you've got an existing driveway that's rutted, washed out, or just not shedding water the way it should, I can regrade it and bring it back. Sometimes that means adding material, sometimes it means reshaping what's already there. Either way, I'll come walk it with you, tell you what I see, and give you a straight answer on what it'll take to fix it.
Long access roads across Montana properties have their own set of challenges — rocky ground, steep grades, seasonal drainage crossings. I've built access roads across all kinds of terrain in the Helena area and know how to route them to minimize maintenance and handle spring runoff without washing out every year.
It depends on length, width, terrain, and what material we're using. I can't give you an accurate number without seeing it. Call me and I'll come out, walk the job, and give you a quote with no hidden extras — just a clear price for the work.
